With calm and management, John builds the future of Spatio

In November 2025, John Oosterbroek joined Axelio as Team Lead of the Spatio team in Zwolle. He did not step into a ready-made situation, but right in the middle of a phase of change and development. With a pragmatic view, a passion for technology, and a drive for connection, he has since been building a team that makes the world of Field Service smarter.

Let's start at the beginning: what exactly is Spatio?

Spatio is Axelio's user-friendly Field Service Management Solution. It supports planning and communication for service technicians, commercial field services, and inspectors.

Imagine: an organization has hundreds of installations across the country and dozens of technicians on the road. Without proper management, this leads to a logistical puzzle that is almost impossible to solve. That's where we come in. With Spatio, we bring calm and control to those complex field service processes.

We build the software that connects everything: the planner in the office enters a task, the right technician immediately receives all the information on their mobile app, and the customer knows exactly when the specialist is at the door. Because we connect Spatio to ERP and CRM systems, all data is always up-to-date. We ensure that technology does not hinder the technician in the field, but rather helps them deliver work faster and better.

Seeing opportunities in challenges

For John, the choice for Axelio was a conscious step towards an environment where something could still be 'built'. "I don't like a too comfortable path; I thrive on a healthy dose of dynamism," John explains. "During my first conversations, it was honestly shared that there were some challenges within the team and the processes at that moment. Where others might hesitate, I saw the potential to implement structural improvements and truly add value."

Building the Spatio team

The Spatio team in Zwolle consists of a close-knit group of six developers who specialize in the further development of the Spatio software. "When I started, I noticed that everyone was still working very much in their own silos," John explains. "My first priority was to create connection. We switched to a tighter schedule and short two-week sprints, which has brought much more control and calm to the team. We cover each other's work and test each other's code; we really do it together now."

"I encourage my team members to take initiative in their development. I don't chase anyone, but I give you all the space and resources to take the lead in your own growth."

Calm, Cleanliness, and Regularity

John's philosophy for the team is simple but effective: Calm, Cleanliness, and Regularity. He sees it as his task to keep the pressure off his people so they can excel in technology. "I am proud that we have created a climate in a short time where people feel heard. We celebrate successes, no matter how small. If a project goes live? Then we arrange cake. That informal connection and a simple pat on the back are the engine behind our performance."

Innovation at the controls

What makes working at Spatio unique is the freedom to experiment with modern techniques. While many parts of Axelio focus heavily on Microsoft solutions, John's team builds the Spatio software with languages like Ruby on Rails and Flutter for the technicians' mobile apps. "We continuously look at how we can use technologies like AI and Machine Learning to speed up processes, for example by supporting technicians with a chatbot in their work," says John. "We are not just building an application; we are building the efficiency of the man or woman in the field."

The future: growth through initiative

When John looks a year ahead, he sees a team that is ready for further scaling. "My goal is that we have a stable foundation that allows us to support even the largest multinationals effortlessly."
